Following the collapse of the 2021 T20 World Cup, rumors have been circulating about the dismissal of head coach Russell Domingo. It is also rumored that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will remove Domingo and appoint a new coach before 2022.
Nothing much happened. Domingo is still the head coach of the Bangladesh team. The Tigers have toured South Africa under him. However, like many others, Mashrafe bin Mortuza, the most successful captain of Bangladesh cricket, is not very satisfied with him.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Mashrafe Sojasapatai said that the failure of Bangladesh under Domingo is more than its success. Mashrafe did not say anything directly about excluding Domingo. He left the decision to the board.
However, Mashrafe said that the players have a lot of complaints about Domingo. According to him, the biggest thing is to be satisfied with the dressing room under a coach. But it is not under Domingo.
Mashrafe said, “This (change of coach) is the decision of the BCB. He asked me if I thought Domingo’s success rate was not that high. The most important thing is that the players have a lot of complaints about him. ‘
He added, ‘The first thing is to be happy in the dressing room. If the dressing room is happy then good. I didn’t think so, so I said openly. Speaking of success, Domingo’s ratio is not so good in Bangladesh cricket. Now if BCB is happy with him, very good. It is in the hands of BCB. ‘
As a player, Mashrafe got Domingo in only one series. He announced his resignation from the captaincy in the same series against Zimbabwe in 2020. That has been Mashrafe’s last series so far. However, Mashrafe evaluated Domingo’s coaching on the basis of what he saw from the outside.
“It simply came to our notice then. I didn’t work with him much, just three matches. Too much discussion, no chance to talk to him. But no matter how many matches we have lost, he has to take the responsibility. We lost a lot of matches here, which were not meant to be lost. What we won in New Zealand, maybe we weren’t supposed to win.
‘All in all let’s see how far ahead. But if you ask me personally, I think the burden of failure is on his neck. As I said before, Bangladesh team is not in a position to experiment. Now the audience wants fruit, everyone wants fruit. In that case, Bangladesh cricket is not in a place to experiment with a new coach.
‘Bangladesh cricket is now the time to give performance. In ODI cricket, he has been playing well for the last 6-7 years. In other formats but this is the same situation. If you look at the matches we lost at home in the Tests, the last (T20) World Cup, the Test match against Afghanistan, there is a lot more. ‘
In the past, however, Mashrafe has high hopes for Domingo’s upcoming tour of South Africa. Since Domingo plays in his home country, Mashrafe believes he will have a big role to play in the series.
He said, ‘I think so far but his ratio is worse.! Let’s see if something extra ordinary comes to South Africa now. Because he also knows about his culture, his familiar environment, wickets. Hopefully he will play a big role here. It would be great if he could do that now. ‘
